About Empower Work
What is Empower Work?
Empower Work is a U.S.-based, national nonprofit that provides free, confidential, text-based support for people experiencing challenges in the workplace. If you’re experiencing a work issue, challenge, or hardship, you can chat with a trained peer counselor via text or web chat. As of 2025, Empower Work has helped ~500,000 people through its offerings.
How can Empower Work help me?
You’ll connect with a trained peer counselor who understands workplace challenges firsthand. Together, you'll talk through your situation, explore your options, and develop a personalized game plan to address your specific workplace concerns.
What can I text about?
Trained peer counselors support any issue related to work - from job search to job loss, career decision to career change, manager problems to coworker challenges.
Is Empower Work really free?
Yes! The service is funded by foundations, individual donors, and volunteers—including some users who choose to pay it forward after benefiting from our support.
Is my conversation confidential?
Yes, conversations are confidential. We recommend using a personal phone or computer, and clearing your browser history or using incognito mode for extra privacy.
Can anyone at my job see that I texted Empower Work?
No. Empower Work is not connected to any employer and doesn’t share data with workplaces.
Is Empower Work available in Spanish?
No! Currently Empower Work is only available in English.
Can I use Empower Work if I live outside the U.S.?
Currently, Empower Work is designed for people in the U.S.
Is Empower Work the same as Crisis Text Line or therapy?
No. Crisis Text Line is focused on mental health crises. Empower Work is specifically for work-related challenges.

Using the Service
How do I start a conversation?
Text us at 510-674-1414 or click "Chat Now" on the website. You’ll connect with a trained peer counselor.
How long does it take to get a response?
Typically within a few minutes. Occasionally, it may take longer depending on volume.
What types of workplace issues can I text about?
Common topics include:
Bias, discrimination, bullying, or harassment
Job loss or fear of termination
Job search
Career change or career decision
Manager or coworker conflict
Burnout or anxiety
Unsafe or toxic environments
Can I text multiple times?
Yes. While each conversation is treated individually, you’re welcome to reach out as often as needed.
Do I talk with the same counselor each time?
Usually no, but each counselor has all the context they need to support you.
Is there a phone line a call?
No. Empower Work operates entirely via text (or voice to text) and web chat.
Are messages answered by real people or AI?
Real people. All responses, besides the first few automated screening questions, come from trained peer volunteers, not bots or AI.
Privacy and Data Use
Does Empower Work use my data?
We use anonymous, aggregated data to improve our service and understand workplace trends. We never share individual-level data.
How does Empower Work improve its service using data?
We gather feedback through surveys and anonymized usage trends (like time of day or general topics).
Does Empower Work work with researchers?
Sometimes. We may collaborate with research institutions to study workplace dynamics — using only anonymized and aggregated data.
Is my personal information stored or sold?
No. We never sell your information or share it in ways that would identify you.
Volunteering with Empower Work
What is a peer counselor?
A peer counselor is a trained volunteer who provides confidential coaching-based support to people facing workplace challenges via text or chat.
Do I need experience to volunteer?
No specific background is required. Volunteers come from diverse fields and share a commitment to helping others.
What training do peer counselors receive?
Each volunteer completes over 30 hours of training focused on active listening, workplace issues, and text-based support.
How do I become a peer counselor?
Apply online, complete eLearning and finish training. Details on the volunteer page.
What skills can I build by being a peer counselor?
As a peer counselor, you'll develop active listening, empathetic communication, crisis support, and problem-solving skills. You'll also learn how to navigate resources and build emotional resilience.
Can I volunteer with a full-time job?
Yes! Many of our volunteers work full-time and schedule shifts flexibly.
What’s the time commitment?
At least 2 hours/week for 6 months.
Can I volunteer from anywhere?
Yes, everything is remote and accessible via a secure internet connection.
Are peer counselors paid?
No. Empower Work is a nonprofit and the role is fully volunteer-based.
Can I receive a reference or certificate for volunteering?
Yes, many volunteers use their experience with Empower Work to strengthen their resumes, build coaching skills, or receive professional references.

Can Empower Work help if I’m experiencing discrimination or harassment at work?
Yes. While we can’t provide legal advice, we can help you process what’s happening, explore your options, and connect you with trusted resources that specialize in addressing discrimination, harassment, or retaliation.
Can Empower Work support me through burnout, anxiety, or stress at work?
Yes. Many people reach out to us feeling overwhelmed, isolated, or unsure how to cope. We’re here to listen without judgment and help you navigate what you’re feeling.
Can Empower Work help me navigate through career transitions?
Yes. From navigating between multiple job offers, leaving an existing job, and questions to ask if thinking of leaving (benefits, PTO payout, etc.) Empower Work can help you feel supported through this transition.
Does Empower Work help with unhealthy or unsafe workplace conditions?
Yes. While we don’t provide legal advice, we can support you in navigating difficult or unsafe work environments and connect you with resources that may be able to help—whether it's about unfair treatment, toxic culture, or unsafe conditions.
The vast majority of harmful workplace issues are unfair, but unfortunately not unlawful. We do our best to guide people through these emotionally and economically.
